A couple who are friends of mine adopted a three-month-old Golden Retriever named Datou before having their first child.
Every day, Datou would wait by the door for my friends to come home from work, and in the evenings, they would all go for walks together.
In this way, Datou accompanied them for seven years. In the eighth year, Datou developed bone cancer and was in constant pain, unable to walk for long periods.
Finally, my friends, overcome with grief, made the difficult decision to euthanize Datou. After cremation, they placed his urn in the living room of their home.
The following year, their child was born. Amazingly, the baby, who would cry in the bedroom, would fall into a peaceful sleep when placed in the living room, close to Datou.
Perhaps this is Datou’s way of continuing to watch over my friend’s family.
